COTA’s SOAR program brings in new students with a summer orientation to help them acclimate to campus. The main campus in idyllic Laguna Beach is supplemented by a modern facility in Big Bend, where computer labs, a recording studio, and animation studios are available for students. The BFA Visual Communications programs take place on the Big Bend campus. Liberal Arts requirements in science, global studies, English, critical theory and art history invite students to understand their artistic practice in a larger context.

The campus is only about an hour from Los Angeles, so students have easy access to museums, galleries, the entertainment industry, graphic design studios, and much more. Students have access to many different facilities for art-making, including lighting equipment, studio space, and green-screen rooms. Moreover, the school's location in San Francisco means that there are several opportunities to connect with creative internships and working artists. Note that I did include some schools on this list that are technically subsets of bigger universities because they're autonomous enough to be considered art schools in their own right (though you would have to apply to the larger college to get in). Art schools give students the opportunity to interact with many other individuals who share their artistic passions.

We hope that this cohort model doesn’t just stay here at school but goes beyond that. I know some Grace College art cohorts stay in touch, share work, and encourage each other long after they graduate. And on a personal level, the classmates I had at Grace are now my guest speakers for courses. The cohort that is established at Grace, but then becomes a lifelong community, is very powerful and enriches the life of the artist.

Prizes will also be given this year to a student and an alumnus for the best chalk art celebrating SCAD's 45th Anniversary. Students graduate with a final portfolio that highlights their unique talents, technical skills, and innovative ideas to launch them into creative, rewarding, and meaningful careers. Otis College is dedicated to multi-disciplinary Travel Study courses that allow students to learn and work together in settings far beyond the College Campus. Teens and children are able to explore and develop their creative talents through our Summer of Art, Young Artist Workshops, Summer Camps, and Portfolio Preparation programs. The two most important things about the Writing Program for me were the mentorship—being pushed by, and being championed by, faculty—both while I was at CalArts and after I graduated. I sang as a child, took a break right around adolescence when my voice dropped, and I began singing again in rock bands when I was 15 or 16. After some classical training I realized how much I enjoyed singing classical music, and at CalArts,... I was inspired to play the violin at age 6 after watching a live performance in Branson, Missouri. My mom encouraged me to pursue it and after my first lesson I knew that the violin was going to be my passion.
