The Best Colleges for Art majors ranking is based on key statistics and student reviews using data from the U.S. This year's rankings have introduced an Economic Mobility Index, which measures the economic status change for low-income students. ACT/SAT scores have been removed from rankings to reflect a general de-emphasis on test scores in the college admissions process.

Students work under the sage tutelage of top faculty like Catherine Opie, Barbara Kruger, and Andrea Fraser; notable alumni include John Divola and Elliott Hundley. RISD is renowned for a technically driven curriculum, so if you prefer to spend more time getting dirty in the studio than reading critical theory, this is the place for you. Classes are generally pretty small, too, with a student-to-teacher ratio of 10 to one, so you’re guaranteed quality time with your peers and professors. Programs of study include painting, sculpture, and photography, as well as furniture design and glass. Roughly 90 percent of graduates from RISD find work within three years, with over 60 percent of those landing a job directly related to their field of study. Alums include Andrea Zittel, Jenny Holzer, Kara Walker, and Ryan Trecartin.

When I came to CalArts I had limiting preconceptions about how to achieve the kinds of dramatic effects I wanted in my films. The faculty helped by pointing out precisely where I had missed opportunities in editing a scene, or possible moves for the characters that I hadn’t... The latest issue of The Pool, CalArts’ twice-yearly alumnx/alumni magazine, is now online with features and news items about the CalArts community.
How to prepare for an arts and design degrees
In an interview with The Times, Govan emphasized that continual expansion along Wilshire Boulevard would yield diminishing returns. LACMA is instead developing a “strategic plan of regional partnerships” with museums — large and small — in order to pull more of its collection out of storage, and make it accessible to as many people as possible. Which explains a recent announcement that LACMA is partnering with the upcoming Las Vegas Museum of Art to share both expertise and, eventually, its collection. The architectural ensemble, dating back to the 13th century, showcases various styles, including Plateresque and Baroque elements. The building underwent successive reforms over the years, adapting it to modern university standards.
It’s not a clear-cut answer — but here are some of my thoughts on the matter. UCLA’s Visual and Performing Arts Education Program gives student artists interested in arts education a chance to practice their teaching skills as they help provide services to K-12 students in underserved communities. Within its top-ranked studio art program, UCLA combines a rigorous combination of skills and studio training with critical theory and history coursework. The design media arts program provides training in contemporary practices for game design, printing, photography, 3D modeling, and virtual reality media.
By contrast, at less specialized schools, art departments might suffer from neglect since they represent a less popular major choice. Before I came to CalArts I studied media and interactive design in Korea. Technology is rapidly changing and I wasn’t sure how this accelerated moment was affecting my identity as an artist. An arts education in a small school, within a major university that has every activity and resource you might want, at the center of one of the world’s most exciting creative capitals—that’s Roski. Arts District next door and all of SoCal’s adventures within reach, you’ll have every opportunity to immerse yourself in the arts and enjoy the environs. Pursue one of three USC Roski undergraduate programs, including a BA Art, a studio-based and immersive BFA Art, or a BFA Design with 2D and 3D applications.
Heather Harmon, executive director of Las Vegas Museum of Art, says the museum is tentatively slated to open in 2028 and has established a campaign fundraising goal of $150 million, as well as plans for an endowment. The deal isn’t a jackpot for L.A., which has long been promised its own satellites. Our first-rate Creative Campus is equipped with a Fab Lab, construction, biomaterials and textile research laboratories, experimentation workshops, digital fabrication classrooms, and an exhibition area. Toy Design faculty are leaders in their chosen field, find out more about their work here. Otis students are the future of Toy Design who will shape the industry, impact society, and inspire generations to come. Located in the design district of downtown San Diego, the NewSchool of Architecture and Design focuses on networking and learning to navigate an increasingly globalized design world.
Annie Leibovitz shot for Rolling Stone while still a student at SFAI; other alumni made history by winning the first directorial Oscar awarded to a woman (Kathryn Bigelow) and painting Barack Obama’s official Presidential portrait (Kehinde Wiley). From corporate internships to semesters painting in Florence, these programs offer many student experiences. Other programs fit within a broader university context, offering interdisciplinary degrees and requiring admission first to the parent university. You should also look for colleges that have strong advisory systems and give students lots of individualized attention. These qualities will make for a smooth transition from college to the professional art world.
My graduate thesis film was about folklore and ghost stories as told through the voices of members of my mother’s family in Trinidad. There’s an element of narrative in my work, but it’s not purely narrative; there are no scripts or actors. It ran on Cartoon Network for many seasons and was cool because I got to make my own mini films. As an artist, you realize that everything you’ve learned in your whole art life will come back at some point; it has for me. It’s been amazing how my design training at CalArts has helped me in editorial cartooning for print. I think there is a higher level of expectation for an actor-artist at CalArts than at other places.

With no requirement to specialize in a medium, you can focus on what’s relevant to your needs and interests. It is "thinking outside the box" so many times you've decided to forget the box altogether. Not to mention you will become a master at thriving with little to no sleep and develop thick skin from enduring brutal critiques.
